New Information about Magnesium

June 8th, 2008

I recently tried out some new transdermal magnesium chloride after reading the information on this site. I also bought Dr Sircus' book, "Transdermal Magnesium Therapy". It's very good.

Magnesium is needed for almost every chemical reaction in our bodies and over 68% of Americans are deficient in it. Our levels are often so low that taking magnesium orally does not bring them up to normal. Oral magnesium is poorly absorbed and leads to diarrhea so many doctors give magnesium intravenously to bring patients back into balance.

Now there is a new way to absorb magnesium. The product is called Ancient Minerals and you spray it on your skin, diluted with water to the level that feels comfortable. People have different levels of sensitivity in their skin. Or you can put it in a bath or a footbath.

If you have heart problems, asthma, cancer, depression or migraines, you really need to read the whole site at the above link. But our focus here is on bone strength so, as I've said before, the balance of calcium and magnesium is one of the deciding factors for the health of your bones.

Dr Sircus says, "It is magnesium that controls the fate of potassium and calcium in the body. If magnesium is insufficient, potassium and calcium will be lost in the urine and calcium will be deposited in the soft tissues (kidneys, arteries, joints, brain, etc.)… Calcium causes muscles to contract and magnesium helps them to relax."

The ratio of calcium to magnesium among Americans is estimated to be 6:1 and many researchers think it should be less than 2:1. Now calcium is being tossed willy-nilly into almost every processed food so our numbers are going to get even higher as the younger generation grows up. This is a bad portent for osteoporosis.

Dr Kathryn Ryder said, "Higher magnesium intake through diet and supplements was positively associated with total-body bone mineral density in older white men and women. For every 100 mg per day increase in magnesium, there was an approximate 2% increase in whole-body BMD.

Dr Barnett compared the bones of healthy people and osteoporotic bone and found the calcium content to be similar but the magnesium content much lower in the weaker bone, 1.26% to .62%. That was in the 50's and doctors haven't got the message yet. They are pushing gobs of calcium onto every woman over 40 as if it was the magic bullet for bones, in the face of all the evidence to the contrary.

Here is a good test – if you can bend over to pick something off the floor and squat to look for something you've dropped, without any creaking or effort, then you are probably not storing too much calcium in your body. If that is not the case for you then some more magnesium would be a good idea.
Or you could have a real test, of course. I'm taking an intense bunch of detox stuff and a stack of supplements right now and then I intend to have a red blood cell analysis done at the end of the month to see what nutrients and toxins I have within my cells. Then I will be clearer on what I need to take after that.

If you have been reading the blog regularly, then you know I have added a lot of new hormone supplements plus the extra D3 lately as well. That makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly which effect is attributable to each thing. But, I can say without a doubt, that spraying the magnesium for a couple of weeks has improved my patience level amazingly. Impatience is my main shortcoming, I think. Others may have different  suggestions, probably a long list of them. :-)  I admit to having felt impatience with my mother often in the past. Now I can walk along at a snail's pace in harmony, I can listen to the same remark I've heard a hundred times before and respond kindly. This week on our shopping outing I felt blessed instead of harassed. That's worth the slightly high price of the transdermal magnesium for sure.

May you be flexible and peaceful – That would be nice for the world in general, wouldn't it? Spray your partner with some magnesium as well.

New Look at Vitamin D3

May 29th, 2008

You probably all know that calcium will not make bone in your body without the help of Vitamin D3. In my videos there is a clip of me glugging down Cod Liver Oil from a tablespoon. I was under the impression that I was exceeding my need for Vitamin D3 by a pretty large amount, since the RDA, which we all know is ridiculous, is only 400 IU. A tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil gives 1200 IU plus I have 800 IU in my multi-vitamin.

Imagine my surprise when a test showed my Vitamin D3 level to be 27 while the preferred range is 70 – 100. If I upped my intake of the oil then the amount of Vitamin A, which is also in the oil, might be excessive. There is almost no danger in excess Vitamin D supplementation but that is not the case with Vitamin A.

So I started researching and found an amazing new book, The Vitamin D Cure. It is really a necessary read if you want to get to the bottom of the bone-building mystery. Dr Dowd says the same as I have always said, that we take too much calcium and it's dangerous.

Since more than half the American population of any age is Vitamin D deficient this is not a minor problem. Age, brown skin, and obesity add to the likelihood of you lacking in this vitamin.

Our bodies make Vitamin D from the sun mostly, there are few foods that have it. So how much sun do you get on a daily basis, without sunscreen? Not much, I'll bet. I'm in California but a beautiful sunny day might go by entirely without my presence while my nose is buried in my computer. We don't store Vitamin D either so it's not something you can get on your vacation to last the year.

The other thing Dr Dowd goes into in depth in his book is the acidification of our diets, our lack of fresh vegetables and fruits and overconsumption of refined grains and dairy products. He is singing my song – green vegetables every day, as much raw as possible and regular exercise. I really recommend the book. If you take enough Vitamin D3 to get your numbers within the preferred range, you can expect your health to improve in amazing ways including pain erasure and more flexibility.

I am now taking a total of 5000 IU of Vitamin D. That's 3 1000 IU capsules added to the Cod Liver Oil and multi. I will have another test in 3 months and see if I have reached my goal. The number is based on my weight according to a table in the book.

Another interesting thing is that you can cut your extra calcium supplements out when you have your Vitamin D within range. He has a very interesting and somewhat complicated chapter on the interactions of calcium and D3 that explains a lot.

Your children and grandchildren should be taking more Vitamin D also. The D they add to milk is probably D2, which is not as absorbable and not as easily recognized by the body. It will help them in every conceivable way and perhaps they will not grow up to have bone issues as we do. Dr Dowd makes the case that our bone patterns were laid down during pregnancy and childhood by the availability of Vitamin D. I know that we children were given Cod Liver Oil and Malt from a spoon when we were young but my mother was never given any during pregnancy, the most important time.

So, get the book, it will be something you can recommend to your whole family. Then get some supplements, 1000 IU Vitamin D3. I got Now Foods, 180 capsules for less than $5-. Can you imagine something that will be life-changing that is so cheap! Then get rid of the acidifying stuff in your diet and exercise regularly in moderation. That's a formula to send your biological age going backwards.

Test for Bone Loss Markers

May 21st, 2008

I mentioned on my DVDs that there was a urine test for bone loss called the Pyrilinks-D test. Some women have called and said they could not find the test online. Now I have found an online company that has an amazing array of tests that you can get without a prescription.

Since most testing companies will not deal with patients directly, it is a great idea for this company to be the go-between. You pay them for the test and then they give you an order to take to a local lab for the blood or urine draw. They email your results and there is information on the site to show you how to read your own results.  They have been in business since 1985 and were highly recommended to me. Here is their test list page, scroll down for Osteoporosis – http://www.directlabs.com/testtypes.php.

The one they have for Osteoporosis is the same as the Pyrilinks-D test. This tells you if you are building bone or losing bone. This is really all we need to know to adjust our bone program. If you are still losing bone after wearing your vest regularly, then you should look into your pH levels, your magnesium levels, and. Vitamin D3 and B12. Also maybe it is time to adjust your diet – especially leaving out sugar and processed foods of all kinds.

I also think that checking your thyroid and adrenals would be a good idea if you are still losing bone. Many women I speak to are very upset that they are losing bone because they have eaten in a healthy way and exercised for many years. I am finding support for the idea that some of us Type A women tend to over-exercise, which is very hard on the adrenals. Bone density is regulated by the hormonal system (like everything else in our bodies) so to grow old gracefully we need to have our thyroid and adrenal glands working well.

I never did exercise to exhaustion but I sure did a lot of physical work to exhaustion in my day. We Type A's can't quit until the job is done even if we are on our knees. I think with exercise we get the endorphins when we overdo it and with work we get the sense of self-satisfaction and accomplishment. There is always a mental or emotional tie-in somewhere.

Check out the other tests on the site. The next one I'm doing is the Nutrient and Toxic Elements test. It is a red blood cell test and most of your doctors won't have heard of it. They test blood serum – whole blood. But what is in you blood fluid may be there because it can't get into your cells. By testing at a cellular level you can find out if you are really benefiting from the supplements you are taking. You can also find out how much heavy metal and other toxic substances are in your cells.

To have a good flow of nutrients into your cells, and waste products out of them, you need to keep the cell walls flexible and that is where magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Omega 3 fatty acids come in. Many of you are eating saturated fat and/or taking way too much calcium. Both of which will make your cell walls stiff and impermeable. I will revisit that topic soon because I have just ordered a new form of magnesium to test out. Just remember this, if your body is stiff you need more magnesium and less calcium. Creaking when you get out of bed is NOT normal.

Here's to waking up with a smile,
Pam

Higher Risk of Stroke & Heart Problems with Fosomax

April 29th, 2008

Besides Fossy Jaw and excruciating muscle pain, taking bisphosphonate drugs may make women more likely to have atrial fibrillation. That is a heart problem that can lead to strokes.

In a study of 700 women, those who had taken bisphosphonate drugs for ANY length of time had an 86% higher risk of atrial fibrillation. The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Since the bone drugs were initially designed for the high risk, aging population with chronic osteoporosis and were never tested for younger women, the FDA did not make the drug companies test for this problem although they knew it existed. However the drug companies were not satisfied with such a small market and have since brainwashed doctors into prescribing the drugs to millions of women who are far from having severe bone disease. They are selling the drug as a preventive measure with no valid testing beyond ten years.

In fact, doctors I have spoken to have said they don’t allow their patients to take the drug longer than ten years. But since they start pushing it on women under 50 now, that is a very short-sighted view.

Anyway now the drug companies are trying to push the monthly bone drug, the FDA is getting a little worried about the possible problems with the heart from a drug four times as toxic. So it has decided to study the matter for one year. At the end of that time they will probably decide that there is not enough information and procrastinate some more, instead of protecting women as they are supposed to do.

There is excellent coverage of the whole issue of bone drugs and bone tests on Byron Richards site here.  It goes into detail on how the drugs work by causing inflammation in the bone, which is why it looks bigger on the dexa scans after the drugs. He also says that  "numerous studies with bone biopsies show that bisphosphonate treated bone is actually swollen, chaotically disorganized and weaker than healthy bone."

So, now there is even more reason to get off the drug if you are on it and to tell your friends not to fall for the drug pitch when their bones first start to get a little thinner with age. Strong, thin, flexible bones beat swollen, inflamed brittle bones any day of the week.

Stay well,
Pam

My Hormonal Problems Were Quite an Adventure

April 9th, 2008

As I said at the beginning of the year, I had an appointment at a hormone specialist practice in February. I had no idea really what I was getting into but I had certain symptoms that were troubling. One was an increasingly high pulse rate, up to 130 at times and averaging 100, a very low blood pressure and increasing fatigue.

I have written an article about this for the site for women who are interested in all the details -here- but this is a short version for the blog. I think many of us with bone problems also have hormone issues so this may be a wake-up call for many women.

It turns out that the Armour thyroid I was taking for my hypothyroid condition was not working correctly. T3 is like the gas in our engines, we can’t live well without it. But in me the Armour was making Reverse T3 as well as T3, and the Reverse T3 was blocking the receptors on my cells so the real T3 couldn’t get in. When the tests came back I was found to have Hashimoto’s disease, which is a non-functioning thyroid. This is an auto-immune disease like the diabetes 1.5 and apparently auto-immune diseases trigger more of the same. My adrenal system is also under attack. The rest of my hormones; estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and aldosterone were very low.

According to the book I recommended, ‘The Hormone Solution’, you can’t try to fix one part of the endocrine system without testing everything and covering all that you need. It just makes everything worse. Unfortunately most doctors are not very well-versed in bio-identical hormones and just want to give you Synthroid for the thyroid and then anti-depressants if you insist on returning with more symptoms.

So I trotted off to Holtorf Medical in LA because they were the closest ones on the list I found from the website linked somehow to the book. They were very expensive but I figured I would get my problem straightened out and it would be worth it.  I have to say I was extremely underwhelmed by the service I got for my money. More on that in the article.

Anyway, I was prescribed various hormones and sent off with instructions to come back in 2 months. The doc did say it would take 6 weeks for the Reverse T3 to work it’s way out of my body but she didn’t warn me that my life might fall apart in the meantime. That first two weeks were a nightmare. I forgot my social security number at one point, and another time I drove 50 miles to deliver something and found out I had forgotten to load part of it.

They call that brain fog and I’d never had that before. I hated it! It was zombie time.
Then I was so tired that I could barely keep the business going. I stopped doing anything but the essentials. Now I’m coming back to life I realize that my internal life stopped also. I didn’t talk to Source or my angels, didn’t even think of them for the most part. It was a very odd experience and I’m actually glad I went through it just so I can really appreciate the rich life I have now my hormones are all coming back online.

I’m just beginning to recover now, it’s four weeks since I started the drugs and it can be a tricky thing to figure out how much of everything you need to make everything work for you. But it really is something you have to figure out for yourself. There is a list of under and over symptoms for every hormone in the book and you have to try and get yourself in that sweet spot that would be different for everyone. No doctor can do that for you.

Once again I have come to realize that we have to take charge of our own health. Do the research and then follow the steps. I’ve read so much about the endocrine system now that I know a lot more than the nurse practitioner that I see. And, once again, the bio-identicals are new endocrinology and still not accepted by mainstream medicine. They give you the same hormones you would be making yourself, in the same quantities, if you were strong and healthy. This is nothing like HRT, which has been proven to be dangerous.

So, I’ll keep you posted. I’m sorry this took so long. I actually have some bone news to blog as well but it may take a few more good days for that.

Onward and upward,

Pam

No News is Good News

January 11th, 2008

I haven’t watched the news in about thirty years, since I gave up on TV. But this past few weeks, with the primaries going on, I didn’t want to miss anything, so I went to the news stations on the computer.

Jeez, what a mistake! I can’t believe all the bad news that I have been missing. I would go to look at the results and the issues and get caught up in stories about people murdering their kids, the failing economy, lost pregnant marines, etc., etc.

I finally realized that I was getting very anxious today and tracked down where it was coming from. So, now I’m going back to sweet oblivion, putting my focus back on health news alone. I already chose my candidate so I really don’t have to struggle through the nasty ups and downs of campaigning. I’m sure I’ll hear about it when he wins. In fact, although people wonder how I live without the news, I find that I always know important things pretty quickly.

Peace be with us all, even if we have to close our ears to the hubbub that we can’t change,
Pam

Concern About Lead Weights

January 9th, 2008

Since there has been so much alarm in the press lately about lead, I have had some women call me about the lead used in the weights in the vest. I was assured by the manufacturer of the weights long ago that there was no chance of toxicity because you don’t touch the actual lead at all, only the bags.

The reason why I used the lead shot is because it is a soft weight, meaning that it moves on impact. It is therefore much less dangerous than large lumps of metal that could cause bone problems in a fall. Unfortunately there is nothing that I can find to substitute that is as heavy as lead. Some vests from China use sand but the mass of sand for the same weight is so much larger that it would not work for women’s vests.

I know that we are exposed to a lot of lead in our daily lives in this country. It is in lipstick, in the lining of food cans, in our water supplies and in old paints and dirt contaminated with the old lead in gasoline. I also worked with lead for many years on my stained glass projects yet I never have tested high on lead in my body.

Anyway, to answer the concern and make absolutely sure the vests were safe and non-toxic, I am now packaging each weight in a heavy-duty ziploc bag, taped shut. This should alleviate all worries about the weights. If anyone who already has a vest reading this would like a set of the bags to put their weights in, please email me with your address and I will send them out to you.

Good health,
Pam

May Your Bones Be Strong in 2008

January 3rd, 2008

Well, this has been a very interesting year so I will update my own bone and health story.

I found out mid-year that I am a Type 1.5 diabetic and not a Type 2, as diagnosed about 3 years ago. It wasn’t a doctor who caught it. It was me doing my own research, as usual. I had been having a harder time controlling my blood sugar with exercise and diet and I couldn’t explain it. So I had a test that reveals your level of GAD antibodies. Less than 1 is normal and I was up at 30.

What that means is that my immune system is attacking my pancreas beta cells. After 3 years the diet no longer worked because too many of my beta cells have died. If I had been properly diagnosed 3 years ago perhaps I could have saved some of them by going on insulin right away. So I recommend that every skinny diabetic should have that test.

I went on insulin and my blood sugar is back under control, using the low carb diet to limit the amount of insulin I need. So that’s working! But I also discovered that I was low thyroid and low adrenals. I tried homeopathic remedies for a while and they helped, but not enough. So now I am on Armour Thyroid and small doses of Hydrocortisone. These are not the bone-destroying doses that some people have to take for arthritis and other diseases. These are doses equivalent to what my body would make itself if it was able to.

From what I am discovering most women over 45 need to have their hormonal system thoroughly checked out. The trouble is that so many doctors are so behind the times on the research that they don’t recognise the symptoms of low thyroid and adrenals and just believe a "one size fits all" test result.

I found a great book, "The Hormone Solution" by Thierry Hertoghe, a Canadian doctor. I had read at least a dozen books on hormones before that one and it really is the best. Through the book I found a doctor group not too far away that specialize in bio-identical hormones. I made an appointment for mid-February and I’m looking forward to getting all my hormones working in tandem once more.

I probably would have resisted this solution a few years ago because I was so against lifetime drugs. But now I have realized the necessity to replace the hormones that our body is supposed to make for itself and no longer does, for various reasons. So I’m still opposed to the poisonous kinds of drugs that attempt to kill certain parts of us without killing us entirely.

The reasons why our hormonal systems start attacking themselves, or slow down, are many and are increasing as the toxins and stress in our culture increase. It could have been an emotional event, a virus, a pesticide exposure or any toxic event, that caused my body to decide that a part of itself was now alien and dangerous and must be destroyed.

I am grateful that medical science has developed the insulin, thyroid and other "almost" natural hormones to use as replacements. Otherwise I would surely die before my time and have enjoyed my life much less.

Of course there are negative reactions in our bones when our hormones are out of whack. I have been longing to gain visible muscle from my rebounding and weight vest and walking. But, although I feel much stronger and have gained a few pounds, I just never got that muscle I wanted in my flabby arms. Don’t you hate that?

Well, the reason why women have a hard time creating muscle after menopause is a lack of certain hormones, testosterone, for one. If you are a woman who has worked out all her life, then you will probably keep the ability to have visible muscle much longer. But even weightlifting women will get stringy and gaunt eventually without bio-identical hormones.

So, it’s a new adventure that I am on this year and I intend to enjoy it. I have already improved a lot with the thyroid and adrenal replacements. I just need some fine-tuning on some of the other hormones to finish the job.

I’ll keep you posted, and may this be your best year ever,

Pam

New Study About Dental Problems after Bisphosphonate Drugs

November 16th, 2007

There is a new study from Australia, published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association, that shows the connection between taking bisphosphonate drugs – Fosomax, Boniva and Actonel and jawbone collapse.

Although most doctors believe that the problem is with intravenous drugs given in cases of cancer, it has been proven that oral drugs have the same problems. It is the conjuction of bone drugs plus dental surgery for replacement of teeth or root canals that compounds the problem. Who among us can say when their teeth will need some deep work?

Even if you have only taken the drugs for less than three years there is still a risk. Since the drugs stays in your system for ten years, the risk is also present for ten years.

Since this is such an important issue I have created an article on the articles page about this topic, with a link to the report. You’ll find it here -  http://osteo-solutions.com/dentalproblems.htm

Interestingly there is now a new name for this new disease – BON – Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis. A new disease created entirely by drug companies!

Check out the full article, stay informed and spread the word.

Latest Testimonial for Weight Vest

November 15th, 2007

My latest dexa showed a good increase of spinal density, with one hip staying the same and another slightly worse. I have changed how I use the vest from just walking, to adding walking up and down steps in my home many many times in a row several times a day with lunges and squats and plies done with the vest for as many reps as I can stand while watching tv.

Since my spine is improved I now add vertical jumps with the vest for 2 min daily as described in Dr. Snow’s weight vest research article. I also used the vest while on an eliptical machine with the highest resistance on the pedals. and on our treadmill with an incline.

I didn’t get osteoporosis because I was frail or out of shape – it’s genetic. My mom got it in her early 40′s.

The fact that I increased my spinal density in only one year and almost held my own with my hips leads me to believe with some more time and tweaking my exercises with my vest I will win this fight!

The vest is so versatile – I use it for tai chi, yoga, hiking, walking hills, walk aerobics, step aerobics, kickboxing , housework, doing your daily errands, rebounding etc. It’s use is only as limited as your imagination and maybe your fitness level.
